Following Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine, over 2 million children are in need of Humanitarian Assistance, and 1.5 million children are at risk of long-term psychological harm. Many children are fleeing alone, through unsafe and dangerous environments.
Erikshjälpen participates in humanitarian and long-term interventions to support children and families in Ukraine - both those who have crossed the country's borders and those who remain in severely affected regions.
Our interventions in Ukraine are largely focused on the rights and protection of children and their families. Through local partner organisations , we provide emergency assistance including cash assistance, food parcels, clothing, hygiene items and blankets, as well as immediate psychosocial support.
In addition to the humanitarian response, we are also providing long-term support to those who have remained in Ukraine and refugees who are now returning to the country. We are ensuring that children and women are able to participate in the reconstruction of their communities and thus regain their lives.
Our support includes food items such as flour, pasta and canned meat, as well as hygiene items such as shampoo, soap, sanitary towels and detergents. During the winter months, we provide additional support to vulnerable families with children, including blankets, pillows and bedding.
Our humanitarian interventions are based on careful mapping of needs on the ground, in vulnerable communities not reached by other humanitarian actors. We do this through mobile humanitarian teams that not only assess the needs of children at risk, but also provide emergency assistance, emergency response and immediate psychosocial support. We work with particularly vulnerable groups such as families with children, people with disabilities and young people without parental care.
We provide support services, via phone lines and the internet, for both children and adults. We work with psychosocial support to process and rehabilitate the trauma of war, including through art therapy. Through our local partner organization, we have established child-friendly family hubs in all areas where we work. The hubs enable development and psychosocial support as well as integration for particularly vulnerable groups such as children with disabilities.
As part of our work to help children overcome trauma, feel empowered and build resilience, we support training programs for parents and teachers. The aim is to give them the tools to support children's mental health.
Example of what a gift can do:
In Ukraine, Erikshjälpen cooperates with the organizations:
In terms of assistance to refugees in the region, we have been working through our partner organisations in neighbouring Romania and Republic of Moldova. Our Regional offices in Romania have also been active in coordinating various relief efforts.
Erikshjälpen also supports its sister organization Human Bridge, which has sent five transports directly to Ukraine with medical supplies - something that is in acute shortage in the country.
We carry out our interventions together with local organisations and are located in Kiev, Sumy, Kherson, Mykolayiv, Odessa, Poltava, Kharkiv, Dnipro and Zaporizhzhya.
