Include the UNCRC in your teaching

The Convention on the Rights of the Child is law in Sweden and applies to children all over the world. It is included in LGR 22, but is above all part of children's everyday lives. That's why it needs to be highlighted a little every day.

The aim of teaching is not only for pupils to know their rights. For the CRC to work, students also need to know how to use it in their everyday lives. That's why Rafiki offers tips on how you, as an educator, can include the CRC in your teaching during the semester.

Part of children's everyday lives

It is common to talk about the Convention on the Rights of the Child around UN Day and perhaps at a theme day in spring. But children need to use their rights every day. Therefore, it is important that the UNCRC is also highlighted in everyday life when you talk about and do things that can be related to children's rights.

In the annual cycle

Rafiki suggests six themes over a three-year period covering the most relevant items for your students. If you make a decision in your school to put these themes in your annual cycle, it becomes a conscious routine for all educators and you can support each other in the different teams. The model can be used for grades 1-3 and then reused for grades 4-6. Since you decide the content, you also regulate the level of difficulty according to your students.

Reducing additional work

If you as a team or school focus on one theme per semester, it is easier to integrate the theme in your teaching into what you already do. This means that teaching about children's rights does not become an extra add-on but a natural part of daily teaching.

From planning to action

Start the school year by looking at the theme of the semester according to the year wheel. Read up on the theme through Rafiki's material or by talking together in your team. Think about how the theme can be linked to your different subjects.

In the fall term of year 1, you have a theme of family, friends and me. Perhaps have the pupils draw self-portraits for the start of school and write about their family. Talk about the right to identity or the right to family. Or play a game on the theme in PE? Use a story from Rafiki's material.

UN Day and theme days

Of course, use UN Day and other thematic days for extra fun. They are a great complement!

There are ready-made materials

Rafiki has ready-made materials that you can use. These include movies, children's stories, factual texts, games and recipes.
