A good friend is the same all over the world. Students and teachers at Grevhagsskolan in Sweden and Nairrataatskolan in Kenya know this. Their schools have been twin schools for 17 years. They have sent each other letters, pictures and videos, visited each other and talked on the computer.
On a September day, some students from Grevhagsskolan in Sweden and Nairrataatskolan in Kenya met. It is the first time that these students talk to each other via computer and they have many questions.
The pupils at Grevhagsskolan have talked a lot about what is important for children. Friends and contact with other people are super important, the students have concluded. Being unfriendly makes you angry and afraid. Then you don't feel good. You should make up and make other people happy.
Nairrataat School in Kenya is located in the town of Emali. John and Tracy are two of the students who attend the school.
All children agree that friends are important. But John finds it difficult to make new friends. Tracy asks the pupils at Grevhagsskolan what they think is a good friend.
- A good friend helps you and asks you to play with them. A friend keeps secrets and is someone you can trust. And you have fun together," say Silwa, Sixten and Alex, who are students at Grevhagsskolan.
Students in Kenya nod and smile.
- We think so too!" says John.
All students know some English so they understand each other. And it's always fun to know a bit of each other's language! Nils asks what houses are called in Swahili. It's called nyumba, the Kenyan children answer. Cyprian asks what a friend is called in Swedish and the pupils at Grevhagsskolan tell him.
Everyone knows what buddy is in Swahili already:
- RAFIKI, everyone shouts and waves before saying goodbye.
