About the listening function

With ReadSpeaker webReader, the content of a web page can be read to you. With just one click, the text on a web page is read aloud and highlighted so you can easily follow along, regardless of your device or location. This makes the content more accessible and visiting the website a more enriching experience. As a user, you do not need to download anything.

How does it work?

Activate webReader by clicking on the Listen button.

webReader also allows you to:

  • Highlight text and click on the Listen button in the pop-up menu that appears for the highlighted text to be read.
  • Click on a piece of text to have it read out automatically.
  • See a clutter-free version of the web page with text in your preferred font, size and color while reading aloud and highlighting.
  • Download an audio version of your content to listen offline.
  • Translate a selected text into several languages and have the text translated into the selected language.
  • Set reading speed, highlighter color, and more.
  • Use the enlarged text tool, which means that the sentence being read appears enlarged at the bottom of the screen.
  • Select a word and find its definition in the dictionary.

Clear instructions on how to use each feature are available in the help tool, which you can find in the menu. Try to read through the help tool to get ideas on how to best optimize the use of webReader.

Keyboard navigation

The webReader can be activated, i.e. focus can be set on the Listen button, with the keyboard shortcut "K". The keyboard shortcut "L" will focus on the player and also start the reading. Many of webReader's tools and features also have dedicated keyboard shortcuts. The keyboard shortcuts are activated with different modifier keys, depending on the browser and operating system (for a list of different modifiers in different environments, click here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Access_key).

Within the player and menu, if the player is in focus, tab/shift+tab can be used to navigate, and the Enter or space bar to activate a particular button or option. The ESC key can be used to stop the current action, close the menu or close a dialog box, depending on the context.

  • Focus on the Listen button: modifier + K
  • Focus on the player and start reading: modifier + L
  • Open/close menu: modifier + 1
  • Open the help tool: modifier + I
  • Other keyboard shortcuts: see the help tool
