Our environmental mission is to promote and develop the reuse of second-hand goods. In this way, we contribute to environmentally sustainable development and a more efficient use of natural resources.
The first environmental objective is to promote a circular transition. We want it to be easy to both shop sustainably and donate to second-hand shops. We also want to share our knowledge and inspire more people to become circulators. The second environmental goal is about minimizing the negative advocacy our own business on the environment.
We believe that people are motivated to adopt more sustainable habits through both knowledge and simplicity. To promote the circular transition and get more consumers to become circulators, we therefore need to spread both knowledge and inspiration, and make it so easy to donate gifts and shop second hand that it becomes the obvious first choice.
We make it easy to choose second-hand in the first place by having many stores in good locations, generous opening hours and with inclusive and inspiring communication. By opening more stores in new locations, and constantly developing our concept, more people will have the opportunity to buy reused products. It is important to share our knowledge and get more people involved in the circular transition. That's why we also collaborate on research projects, take part in debates, run a podcast on second-hand and have a strong social media presence.
During 2024 we sold we sold over 10 million gifts in our second hand-stores.
Gifts that can be reused, but are not sold in Sweden, are donated to our partner organisations in Europe.
Gifts that are broken or otherwise not reusable are sorted for recycling and taken care of by our recycling supplier.
Gifts that are not in good enough condition to be reused or recycled go to energy recovery and become electricity, district heating and cooling.
Gifts that are not are in sufficiently good condition to be reused, recycled or used for energy recovery are classified as landfillwaste. It is for example ceramics, glass, tiles and similar materials.
Reusing and recycling existing resources minimizes emissions from our consumption. Therefore, the transition to a circular economy is crucial for a sustainable society. In the circular economy, there is no waste. Instead, resources are recycled and used efficiently for as long as possible, unlike in today's linear economy, which is based on extract-manufacture-use-and-dispose.
By accepting and sorting donations so that they can be reused, we contribute to a more sustainable use of the Earth's resources. We aim to reuse as much as possible of what is collected. In 2024, our reuse rate in Sweden was 23% and if we include what we donated for reuse abroad, it was 69%!
With inspiring communication and by sharing our experience, we want to raise awareness and strengthen interest in second hand in all parts of society. In our stores and on social media, we are active with both inspiration and educational material. We participate in arenas such as Almedalsveckan and Järvaveckan, write debate articles, give lectures and participate in panel discussions to help improve the conditions for the circular economy in Sweden. We collaborate with others through research projects that shed light on important future issues for the circular economy, and we share our experiences through our sustainability report, among other things. It is important to us that our entire organization is engaged and has a basic understanding of environmental issues, which is why we regularly provide training and lectures to all our employees.
If we encourage more people to buy second-hand instead of new products and at the same time reduce the negative environmental impact of our operations, the positive impact of second-hand sales will be even greater. We strive to be an environmentally conscious organization and reduce the harmful emissions generated by our operations. We work to ensure that our activities do not contribute to environmental impacts that ultimately affect those we serve - children.
We work to reduce the environmental impact of our operations in the following areas
The largest share of our operations' emissions comes from transportation. At the same time, the collection of donations, sales and profits are dependent on a functioning transport operation. Since transportation has such a large impact on the environment and climate, it is important to us that it is managed in the best possible way. We strive to reduce our emissions annually by, for example, replacing vehicles and fuels with more environmentally friendly alternatives, training our drivers in eco-driving and car care, and developing our logistics to work more efficiently. Our goal is for all our transportation to be fossil-free by 2035 (target revised in 2024).
We measure the volume of gifts in three of our gift reception hubs. These measurements show that we receive an average of 8,500 tons of gifts each year. This calculation does not include furniture.
For example, it provides about:
Erikshjälpen Second Hand collects gifts from private individuals and Corporate. We ask for whole and clean gifts, and refuse gifts that cannot be used in the business. As much as possible of the collected material should be reused by us or our partner organisations abroad.
Every year, Erikshjälpen Second Hand receives a large number of gifts. But not all of them are suitable for reuse. What cannot be reused, we prepare for recycling according to waste hierarchy - minimize, reuse, recycle, recover energy and landfill. We sort what would otherwise risk becoming household waste and ensure that it is managed in a resource-efficient way.
Several of our stores are connected to a framework agreement that we have with a recycling supplier. This allows us to follow up and develop our recycling. In our stores and hubs, we divide the waste into combustible waste, biowaste, material recycling, non-recyclable and sortable waste. The sortable waste is then sorted again by the recycling supplier to ensure that as much as possible can be recycled.
A significant part of our combustible waste has been textile waste as we lacked large-scale solutions for sorting and recycling textile waste in Sweden. Since 2025, sorting requirements apply to textiles from other waste. The aim of the law is to reduce the amount of textiles going to incineration, and to promote more sustainable management of textile waste. The collection of textile waste is the responsibility of the municipalities and Erikshjälpen Second Hand delivers textile waste according to the instructions of each municipality.
A small part of our textile waste is also taken care of by local entrepreneurs, Corporate, schools and art projects working on reuse.
Yes, we do. A large proportion of the gifts donated to us are not sold in Sweden, even if they are in good enough condition to be reused. We donate these goods to other organisations in Europe to ensure that as much as possible of what we collect is reused. The organizations that we work with run their own second-hand shops with relief activities that focus on supporting children and families in vulnerable life situations. In this way, we are helping to strengthen the circular economy in Europe and contribute to a growing second-hand market.
Unfortunately, transportation is associated with high emissions. But in the current situation, they are necessary to ensure that the reuse rate of gifts is as high as possible. To reduce transportation, the demand for second-hand goods in Sweden simply has to increase.
We at Erikshjälpen Second Hand are concerned about the shortcomings in the global second-hand trade that the media has highlighted in recent years. To prevent gifts from Erikshjälpen Second Hand from being spread in countries with poor waste management, we work with organisations that have high traceability and proximity to the market. The starting point is that no unsorted material or waste should be sent abroad. We regularly visit our largest recipients and receive reports from them annually on what has happened to the material received.
Two of our major partners are Human Bridge and Friend to Friend. Exports do not generate any income for Erikshjälpen Second Hand.
Yes, Erikshjälpen's head office was environmentally certified in 2022 according to the Swedish Environmental Base (SUSA) and the diploma was renewed in 2023 through an independent review. The environmental certification means that our environmental work is reviewed based on three criteria: working methods, routines and consumption. In addition to the core activities, we work for an environmentally friendly office through a range of activities and follow up our environmental impact with key figures.
We work on the basis of a sustainability policywhich describes our approach to sustainability and sustainable development. In addition, we have a procurement policy that ensures that our purchases and procurements contribute to a high level of quality in our operations and at the same time take great account of environmental and social aspects.
More of our key policies are available in our Document room.
The sustainability report covers Erikshjälpen Second Hand's activities in 2024. It describes the long-term goals and what has been achieved so far within the three perspectives of sustainability; environmental, social and economic.
