Uganda is a country in East Africa. In parts of Uganda, poverty is on the rise, and children are being hit hard. Although the number of children enrolled in school has increased, the number of children dropping out remains high.
Among the causes are early pregnancies and child labor linked to exploitation in the mining industry. The number of children living on the streets also continues to rise.
In Uganda, Erikshjälpen works to help children who live in vulnerability by strengthening their opportunities for education and safety and protection.
Erikshjälpen contributes, among other things, to:
Area: 241,550.6 square kilometers
Capital: Kampala
Population: 50.02 million (2024)
Official languages: Swahili, Luganda, and English
Climate: Uganda has a tropical climate, but it varies depending on elevation and the presence of lakes. Most parts of the country receive sufficient rainfall, so droughts are not a problem here.
Nature: A quarter of Uganda’s land area consists of rainforest. Because of its rainforests, Uganda is sometimes called the “Green Pearl of Africa.” Two-thirds of the country consists of savannas and farmland. In addition, there are many lakes and rivers here, such as Lake Victoria. It is the world’s second-largest freshwater lake. In the western and eastern parts of the country, there are rift valleys, volcanoes, and mountains.
