The Convention on the Rights of the Child

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, commonly referred to as the Children's Convention, is legally binding in Sweden. The Children's Convention is part of the human rights established through various international agreements.

All countries that have signed up to comply with the Convention on the Rights of the Child must do so. Today, every country in the world except the United States has chosen to sign the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The purpose of the Convention on the Rights of the Child is to strengthen children's legal status as rights holder.

Four articles are key principles

Four articles of the CRC are core principles. This means that no matter which of the 54 articles you are talking about, the four core principles must always be included.

The four main principles are:

  • Article 2 - All children have equal rights and equal value.
  • Article 3 - The best interests of the child shall be a primary consideration in all decisions concerning children.
  • Article 6 - Every child has the right to survive and develop.
  • Article 12 - Every child has the right to be listened to in matters concerning him or her.

What is the UNCRC?

The Convention on the Rights of the Child consists of 54 articles, or rules. The rules apply, among other things, to the equal and unique value of all children, regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, beliefs, and religion.
