Articles of the UNCRC for pupils

Here is a short version of the CRC adapted for primary school students. The Convention on the Rights of the Child has 54 rules, usually referred to as articles.

Article 1

A child is a person under the age of 18.

Article 2

All children have the same rights and are of equal value. No one should be treated unfairly.

Article 3

When adults make decisions affecting children, they should always consider what is best for the child.

Article 4

Countries should do everything they can to comply with the UNCRC and cooperate with other countries if necessary.

Article 5

Parents or other caregivers are responsible for educating and helping the child to use their rights.

Article 6

All children have the right to live, thrive and develop.

Article 7

Every child has the right to a name and to belong to a country. They have the right to know who their parents are and to be cared for by them.

Article 8

Every child has the right to keep their identity (who they are).

Article 9

A child should not be separated from his or her parents unless it is necessary for the child's best interests. If the child does not live with his or her parents, he or she has the right to see them frequently.

Article 10

Applications from families wishing to be reunited should be handled quickly and kindly.

Article 11

Countries should work to stop children being taken illegally to other countries.

Article 12

Every child has the right to express their views on all matters concerning them and adults should listen to their views.

Articles 13 to 15

Every child has the right to say what they want, believe what they want and join groups and associations.

Article 16

Every child's privacy should be respected.

Article 17

Countries should ensure that children receive good information from newspapers, TV and other media.

Article 18

Both parents are responsible for the child's upbringing and development.

Article 19

Every child has the right to be protected from violence, abuse and exploitation.

Article 20

A child who cannot live with his or her family has the right to a safe and good alternative home.

Article 21

In the case of adoption, the best interests of the child must always come first.

Article 22

A refugee child has the right to protection and assistance.

Article 23

A child with a disability has the right to live a good life and be part of society.

Article 24

Every child has the right to well-being and healthcare. Traditions that harm children must be stopped.

Article 25

Countries should regularly review the situation of children who do not live with their parents.

Articles 26 and 27

Every child has the right to get help if their family has no money. They also have the right to live well and have what they need to feel good.

Articles 28-29

Every child has the right to go to school. Primary education should be free and help children develop and learn to respect human rights.

Article 30

A child belonging to a minority has the right to their language, culture and religion.

Article 31

Every child has the right to play, rest and have free time.

Article 32

Every child should be protected from dangerous work and work that hinders their schooling.

Article 33

Every child should be protected from drugs.

Article 34

Every child should be protected from sexual abuse.

Article 35

Countries should fight child trafficking.

Article 36

Every child should be protected from all forms of exploitation.

Article 37

No child should be subjected to torture or cruel treatment. Imprisonment should only be used as a last resort and for the shortest possible time.

Article 38

No child may be used as a soldier.

Article 39

A child who has been subjected to violence or abuse has the right to help and Support to recover.

Article 40

A child accused of a crime has the right to be treated fairly.

Article 41

If there are laws that are better for the child than the CRC, those laws should be followed.

Article 42

Countries should inform both adults and children about what the UNCRC says.

Articles 43 to 45

The UN has a group called the Committee on the Rights of the Child. They monitor countries' compliance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child and receive reports from countries on how they are doing.

Articles 46 to 54

A country must comply with the Convention on the Rights of the Child once it has signed it and pledged to abide by its rules.
