Poverty in the world and Sweden

Poverty means more than not having money. It also means not having access to food, clean water and toilets. It can also mean not having a say in decisions, not being healthy, not having an education or not feeling safe. Today, many people live in poverty both in the world and in Sweden.

How do we measure poverty?

Poverty can be measured in different ways. According to the World Bank, people living on less than $20 a day live in extreme poverty. Since 2000, the number of people living in extreme poverty has been cut in half. Today, around 700 million people in the world live in extreme poverty. 333 million of them are children. That's about one in six children.

Poverty in Sweden

In Sweden, we measure poverty in several ways. One way is to measure how many children live in a family with a low income. According to Save the Children, one in ten children live in a family that is financially vulnerable. That's around 200 000 children in Sweden.

Families with low incomes may struggle to pay for food, clothing, electricity, telephone and public transport. Children from these families often have lower grades at school and feel less involved in society.
