Find out more about why people are forced to flee in different parts of the world. Many children are refugees and there are many reasons why they have had to flee. You can also read about Cezar Gavriliu who meets children and young people who are refugees.
One reason may be that people cannot afford to stay in one home or city. Sometimes a parent moves to another city or country for work. This often leaves children to stay with relatives. Sometimes whole families move to a new city or country.
Climate change is another reason why many people need to flee. This can be due to droughts, floods or rising water levels. As a result, people are losing their homes or their livelihoods. It is difficult to know exactly how many people have had to flee their homes because of climate change - but unless the climate improves, many more people will have to flee.
This is Cezar Gavriliu. He works at Erikshjälpens office in Republic of Moldova. He meets many children and young people on the run.
Cezar and his colleagues help children and young people in many ways. Sometimes they need help finding food and a place to stay. It's also important that refugee children don't go missing and that they can stay in touch with their families. Sometimes displaced people also need help with things like money and chargers for their phones.
Often, children and adults also need help with their feelings and to process the horrors they experienced when they had to flee. Many people find it helpful to tell someone else how they feel and think.
When there is a war, the UN and nearby countries try to help those who are fighting to stop. In the meantime, people living in war zones try to cope as best they can. Most hide at home or wherever it feels safe nearby, but many need to flee. Most of those who flee do so in the country where they live and some make their way to another country.
organisations and people who want to help do many good things for those affected by war. Taking food and medicine to places where everything is destroyed is one way to help. Money, medicines, food and shelter are some of the things needed when people flee their homes.
